Really, I did. I made the big announcement to myself, strutted into the so-called “golden years” like I’d finally arrived at some mythical finish line. Cue the parade, cue the hammock, cue the smug grin of “Look at me, finally off the hook.”But apparently, my soul didn’t sign off on this little plan. In fact, I think it laughed out loud, doubled over, tears-in-the-eyes kind of laughed.“Retirement? You? Oh, that’s adorable.”And there I was, standing there like a fool, realizing I’d basically told my eternal, infinite, ever-burning soul to take a back seat so I could spend more time things i want to do.<h2 id="b1582746-1829-4681-9e6f-d30bcc0ba772" data-toc-id="b1582746-1829-4681-9e6f-d30bcc0ba772">The Honeymoon Phase of semi retirement (a.k.a. Soul-Silencing 101)</h2>Let me be honest: the first few weeks of “semi retirement” were glorious. I slept in. I watched people on TV remodel houses they didn’t need. I experimented with snacks like a scientist. I had long conversations with my cat about the meaning of life.For about ten minutes, I thought: “Wow, this is living.”But soon enough, the cracks appeared. I caught myself staring out the window at nothing, feeling the itch in my bones. The pull. The one that says: “You didn’t come here just to perfect banana bread.”And then I heard it… my soul, laughing hysterically. Like the kind of laugh your best friend has when you trip in public and try to play it off like you meant to do that.<h2 id="61b7e73f-5973-4c1a-b225-7218d904dd57" data-toc-id="61b7e73f-5973-4c1a-b225-7218d904dd57">The Punchline: Purpose Doesn’t Retire</h2>Here’s what I learned: retirement is a human concept. Souls don’t retire. They don’t get a pension plan or a gold watch. They don’t clock out, collect severance, and sit on the porch waiting for the mailman.Purpose is eternal. It doesn’t care how old you are, how tired you are, or how many years you’ve put in. If you came here with a mission and you know I did then that mission will hunt you down like a heat-seeking missile every time you try to play small.I tried to whisper, “Shhh, Soul, I’m retired.” It shouted back, “Bitch, please. We’ve got work to do.”<h2 id="6085faab-10e6-4de2-87a3-35c8a8c2f485" data-toc-id="6085faab-10e6-4de2-87a3-35c8a8c2f485">The Soul’s Comedy Routine</h2>If I could transcribe the routine my soul has been performing in my head since I tried this whole “retirement” stunt, it would go something like this:<ul><li>“Retirement? For YOU? The woman who can’t even sit through a movie without seeing a thousand metaphors for human transformation?”</li><li>“Retirement? The one whose idea of fun is dismantling someone’s limiting beliefs over coffee?”</li><li>“Retirement? Tell me again how you thought you could Netflix your way out of destiny.”</li></ul>Every time I heard that laugh, I knew: I had been caught. My soul was onto me, and it wasn’t letting go.<h2 id="3cb33721-1757-4f47-8a6d-4d0f0aee4a5d" data-toc-id="3cb33721-1757-4f47-8a6d-4d0f0aee4a5d">Coming Out of Retirement (and Back Into Alignment)</h2>So here I am, admitting it: I failed at retirement. Completely. Utterly. But in failing, I stumbled back into truth.I didn’t “un-retire.” I resurrected. I remembered. I re-committed to the reason I’m here.Now, don’t get me wrong — I’ll still happily take a mid-afternoon nap or enjoy a glass of wine at 4 p.m. like a rebel granny. But the fire is back, and it’s not negotiable. Because my soul didn’t let me off the hook, and honestly, thank God for that.<h2 id="580a0893-a095-428f-9e20-b94506059a0c" data-toc-id="580a0893-a095-428f-9e20-b94506059a0c">The Deeper Awareness</h2>Here’s the thing: retirement is perfect if your job was just a job. But when your life is your work, when your calling is encoded into your DNA, there is no stepping away.Purpose evolves, it expands, it gets funnier and bolder and louder. And if you’re lucky, like me, your soul won’t let you “retire.” It’ll laugh you back into remembering who you are.So no, I’m not retired. I’m re-fired. Not fading out, but burning brighter.
